Home sharing is a Service which facilitates adults with disabilities to avail of short breaks with a host family in their own home and community. It links the person with local families or individual carers who are specifically assessed for this purpose.
Family based respite is based on the belief that adults with disability should enjoy similar experiences, leisure activities and social environment as others. Such breaks include day evening, overnight or weekend visits.
The Host Carer(s) assist and support the service user with activities such as personal care, meals social/leisure activities and community participation.
The St Anne’s Home Sharing Scheme offers individualised respite breaks to adults with intellectual disabilities in a family setting. It aims to be flexible in being available to people, as they require it. It gives an opportunity for people with intellectual disabilities to form friendships and can be a valuable social outlet and experience for all concerned.
This Home Sharing Scheme commenced in 2005 and currently operates on a very small scale at St. Anne’s and is co-ordinated by a member of the Social Work Team.
A small number of families have been assessed, approved and trained as host carers. It is planned to continue to expand this service as funding allows.
