Host Carers

Home sharing is a Service which facilitates Adults and Children with Disabilities receiving short breaks with a Host family in their own home and community. It links the person to other local families or individuals carers who are specifically prepared and approved for this purpose.

Family based respite is based on the belief that children and adults with disability should enjoy similar experiences, leisure activities and social environment as others. Such breaks include day evening, overnight or weekend visits.

The Host carer(s) assist and support the service user with activities such as personal care, meals social/leisure activities and community participation.

It provides full time carers with a break from continual care and also in times of crisis in their own family also in the knowledge their family member is cared for in a homely environment. The benefits include an opportunity for new friendships for all parties involved most especially for the child/adult receiving the short break,

Home Sharing Limerick

The Have a Break Scheme has been in existence since 1987,it is a home based respite scheme providing short breaks for children with disabilities in the Limerick/North Tipperary region. It is run  co-ordinated by a member of the Social Work Team and governed by the Home sharing Governance Committee.

In 2012 the scheme secured substantial funding from Genio Trust to further develop a Contract Carer scheme for children. This involved a small number of carers extending their availibility and commitment to meet the needs of children with more significant physical and behavioural needs. The aim is to proivde an alternative to residential respite for families and children. Carers are paid a retainer for being available and a rate per session.

Both Home Sharing Schemes continually recruit host carers every year to meet the demand by families for this service, Children with various physical, sensory and intellectual needs are carefully matched with the skills abilities family circumstance and homely environment of the Host carer(s). It facilitiates children going to the home of voluntary host carers for short breaks. The carers receive a payment to cover their expenses.

Host carers are assessed, vetted , trained and approved prior to placing a child with them and the placements are continually reviewed by social work.
